Symbol: alpha-LA Name: Lipoic Acid Species: Mouse Function: α-Lipoic acid (LA) is a naturally occurring short-chain fatty acid with two enatiomers, i.e. it can be in an R(+) or a S(-) form [15996831] LA is an antioxidant *in vivo* and *in vitro* [15996831] and has redox-regulating properties [12548552]. LA scavenage superoxide and hydroxyl radicals and prevents lipid peroxidation [15996831]. LA is intracellular reduced to dihydrolipoic acid (DHLA) [15996831]. LA is also naturally-occurring co-factor for vital metabolic multi-enzyme complexes (pyruvate dehydrogenase and glycine decarboxylase) [12548552]. α-lipoic acid is a component of several (α-ketoglutarate, branched chain and pyruvate) dehydrogenase complexes and an important facilitator of oxidative metabolism, Short-chain fatty acids are effective deacetylase inhibitors. α-lipoic acid was shown *in silico* and *in vitro* to be a protein deacetylase inhibitor [17555985; 12548552]. Observation: In rats, LA confers a memory effect, by fixing the lifespan of previous feeding regimen. When animals are switched early in life (12 months) from DR to AL and supplemented with α-lipoic acid the DR typical lifespan extension is maintained, but switching early from AL supplemented with α-lipoic acid to DR blocks the lifespan extending effect [18486188]. LA exhibits the ability to compensate for age-related, long-term memory deficits in old rats [8309958] and improves the memory and learning in progeriod mice [15627516]. Culturing LA, protects neurons against death induced by hyperoxia, glutamate, iron and H2O2 [12087131; 11602326].
