Body mass is the primary correlative of proliferation potential rather than species lifespan. Assessing the replicative capacity of fibroblasts from 11 species that differ significantly in their lifespan, indicates that replicative capacity is marginally correlated with longevity but correlated with body size [15993927].

Telomerase activity does not coevolve with lifespan but instead coevolves with body mass. There is no relationship between telomere length/telomerase activity and longevity in 15 species of rodents ranging in longevity from 4 to 28 years [17173545].
