Ucp2

Symbol: Ucp2
Name: uncoupling protein 2 (mitochondrial, proton carrier)
Entrez gene ID: 22228
Ensembl gene ID: ENSMUSG00000033685
Species: Mouse (Taxid: 10090)

Functional description:
UCP are mitochondrial transporter proteins that create proton leaks across the inner mitochondrial membrane, thus uncoupling oxidative phosphorylation from ATP synthesis. As a result, energy is dissipated in the form of heat (By similarity). [UniProt]

Observation:

Overexpression in hypocretin neurons results in mice with elevated hypothalamic temperature and reduction of core body temperature and a 12% increase in median lifespan in males and 20% increase in females.
