Prdx1

Symbol: Prdx1
Name: Peroxiredoxin 1
Entrez gene ID: 18477
Ensembl gene ID: ENSMUSG00000028691
Species: Mouse (Taxid: 10090)

Functional description:
Antioxidant enzyme that scavenges peroxidas and uses thioredoxin as an electron donor; Involved in redox regulation of the cell. Reduces peroxides with reducing equivalents provided through the thioredoxin system but not from glutaredoxin. May play an important role in eliminating peroxides generated during metabolism. Might participate in the signaling cascades of growth factors and tumor necrosis factor-alpha by regulating the intracellular concentrations of H(2)O(2). Regulates GDPD5 function by reducing an intramolecular disulfide bond (By similarity). Cooperates with GDPD5 to drive postmitotic motor neuron differentiation. [UniProt]

Observation:

Homozygous Prdx1 knockout mice have a lifespan significant shorter than +/+ and +/- littermates and develop severe haemolytic anaemia and several malignant cancers (starting at about 9 months of age) [12891360]
