Functional description:
Cytoplasmic signalling molecule that mediates effects of insulin, insulin-like growth factor 1, and other cytokines; May mediate the control of various cellular processes by insulin. When phosphorylated by the insulin receptor binds specifically to various cellular proteins containing SH2 domains such as phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase p85 subunit or GRB2. Activates phosphatidylinositol 3-kinase when bound to the regulatory p85 subunit (By similarity). [UniProt]

Observation:

Median lifespan was extended 18% in knockouts from both sexes and 32% in females. Female animals displayed signs of resistance to ageing markers in skin, bone, immune system, and motor dysfunction, in spite of mild, lifelong insulin resistance. Heterozygous animals had normal lifespans.
